The Montgó is the dramatic limestone massif that dominates the skyline of Jávea and Dénia. Declared a Natural Park in 1987, its 2,117 hectares protect over 650 plant species, including endemics found nowhere else in the world.

Hikers come for the legendary summit climb and the cliff-top walks along Cap de Sant Antoni – panoramic, wild and surprisingly accessible from town.

## Hiking the Montgó

The classic ascent from Jávea (Racons / Coll de Pous route) takes 4–5 hours round trip with 700+ metres of climb. The trail is steep, rocky and exposed – not suitable in summer heat.

## Easier walks

Family-friendly options include the Cap de Sant Antoni cliff path and the Cova Tallada coastal cave walk – flatter, shaded and spectacular.

- Cap de Sant Antoni clifftop trail (1–2 hours)
- Cova Tallada sea cave walk (3 hours round trip)
- Les Planes panoramic route (2 hours)

## Flora and fauna

Over 650 plant species including endemics, plus eagles, peregrine falcons and Hermann's tortoises. The unique microclimate supports rare orchids and aromatic herbs.

## When to visit and safety

October to May offers the best hiking conditions. Avoid summer afternoons when temperatures exceed 35°C. Always bring water, a map and tell someone your route.
